I get a message. I open it, skim the text, and get annoyed. It seems I was misunderstood. I rush to write a reply to explain myself. Only once I do that can I finally breathe a sigh of relief. I put out the house fire in time. But, reading the message a second time, I realise that I was extinguishing a house whose porch lights had tricked me by pretending to be flames. I started thinking about first and second sights. One could say that the first sight is less reliable. Even, more adventurous. Love at first sight, too – but, love for whom? The first sight usually has a spectator searching for information within themself. It’s like making a quick dinner with the three ingredients left in the fridge before leaving the house. The second sight is more reliable, more secure – it knows better. That’s why the truth it reveals can sometimes seem unpleasant or, sometimes, surprising. There is a third, a fourth, a fifth sight that’s meant to look deeper and see more. But, these should be used with care, or you might once again see what is not there. I have heard that sight creates fiction. But, which one. I listen to BBC Radio on my drive home. On the programme, pleasant voices speak in depth about primates and predators. One speaker mentions the snake detection theory: the idea that snakes, as predators, were the main evolutionary pressure in the development of the primate visual system. The human visual system can accurately detect snakes even in darkness, during storms, or fog. A snake is sensed before it is consciously seen. Suddenly, I understand why, every time I dream of snakes, I know they are there without seeing them. Even in dreams, seeing before first sight instinctively warns of the dangers, subtly moving nearby.
In a house whose lights disguise themselves as flames, there is at least one drawer where a ruler lies next to a box of pasta, where unused chopsticks from a fast food restaurant slide into family photos, where naked chocolates that have escaped their crinkly clothes cuddle up next to a drawing compass and so on. Once these drawers are opened, no matter how strong the urge, the hand never rises to interrupt their interspecies communication.
